Raleigh City Museum Searching for
Artifacts and Photographs
Related to the North Carolina State Fair
New exhibit to explore the 149-year history of this annual celebration
The public is invited to lend or donate artifacts and old photographs pertaining to the North
Carolina State Fair to assist the Raleigh City Museum's development of its next major exhibit,
"State Fair!," to debut Saturday, October 5, 2002 in the museum's Main Gallery at 220
Fayetteville Street Mall in downtown Raleigh.
"While we have some artifacts and photographs on the State Fair in our permanent collection,
this exhibit will rely primarily on donated and lent items from the general public," said
Dusty Wescott, curator for the Raleigh City Museum. The museum is most interested in old
photographs that depict daily life and personal experiences at the Fair. "The donor need not
give up their photos permanently," said Wescott. "The museum reproduces a negative and an
image from the original photograph and then returns the photo to its owner."
The exhibit, to run approximately six months, will also incorporate donated artifacts. Items
such as old State Fair tickets, premium lists, program books, and awards and ribbons are just
a few of the things the museum is looking for. "Again, just like the photos, these artifacts
could be lent solely for the duration of the exhibit," said Wescott.
