Raleigh City Museum Presents Recent Discoveries
Regarding Joel Lane, Father of Wake County and Raleigh
RALEIGH, N.C. (November 1, 2002) - The Raleigh City Museum will host a lecture by LeRae
Umfleet, executive director of the Joel Lane Museum House, entitled "The Joel Lane Story:
Recent Discoveries." The program will be held on Saturday, November 16 at 2 p.m. in the
museum's Lower Level Classroom at 220 Fayetteville Street Mall in downtown Raleigh.
Ms. Umfleet will discuss new research discoveries regarding Lane, an 18th century plantation
owner also known as the "Father" of Wake County and Raleigh. Colonel Lane was a
prominent statesman who played an active role in the early political affairs of North Carolina.
In 1792 he sold to the State of North Carolina the original 1,000 acres of land that became
the City of Raleigh. The Lane home, Wakefield, was constructed in the 1760s and stands today
at 728 West Hargett Street just west of downtown Raleigh. The Joel Lane lecture is free and
open to the general public. For more information about this event contact Ken Peters,
Coordinator of Education and Outreach, at 832-3775 ext. 11.
