Raleigh City Museum to Explore the
Women's Suffrage Movement in New Exhibit
Museum seeks artifacts and photographs from the public to help support the project
RALEIGH, N.C. (December 31, 2002) - The public is asked to lend or donate artifacts and old
photographs pertaining to Raleigh's experiences during the Women's Suffrage Movement of the
early 20th century to assist the Raleigh City Museum's development of its next exhibit,
"Raleigh and the Women's Suffrage Movement," to debut Saturday, March 29, 2003 in the
museum's Main Gallery at 220 Fayetteville Street Mall in downtown Raleigh.
"While we're in the early stages of our research, we have found some interesting stories
about Raleigh's experience during this national movement," said Dusty Wescott, curator for
the Raleigh City Museum. "However we are in need of local artifacts and photographs that
can visually highlight this important time period."
Donors of artifacts and photographs need not give up these items permanently. The museum
reproduces a negative and an image from the original photograph and then returns the photo
to its owner. Artifacts are typically lent for the life of the exhibit only, and are then
returned to the donor. The exhibit is scheduled to run for one year, closing in February 2004.
