Museum's Saturday Program Series Begins for Fall 2005:
First program will focus on major hurricanes that have affected the area
RALEIGH, N.C. (September 2, 2005) - The Raleigh City Museum begins its
Fall 2005 "Pieces of the Past" Saturday Program Series with
"Hurricanes! North Carolina's Menace" featuring National Weather
Service Meteorologist Jeff Orrock. The program will be held Saturday,
September 17 at 2:00 p.m. in the museum's A.E. Finley Foundation
Gallery inside the Briggs Building at 220 Fayetteville Street Mall.
The program is free and open to the general public.
Using the Raleigh City Museum's "Nature Unleashed! Disasters in
Raleigh" exhibit as a backdrop, Mr. Orrock will provide a talk about
the great storms that have wreaked havoc on North Carolina. The
program will also consider why North Carolina has been hit so much in
the past, why some years are more active than others, and what the
future holds for hurricanes and North Carolina. If you remember the
afternoon Hurricane Hazel blew through Wake County in 1954, or the
horrifying night in 1996 when Hurricane Fran roared over Raleigh, you
will not want to miss this lecture. The program will also be of
interest to children 10 and above who have a special interest in
nature at its most powerful.
The "Pieces of the Past" Saturday Program Series continues on November
19 when the museum will host "Memories of Fayetteville Street," an
open forum discussion held in conjunction with the opening of the new
exhibit "The Changing Face of Fayetteville Street." The discussion
will begin at 2:00 p.m. that day inside the museum's gallery at 220
Fayetteville Street Mall in downtown Raleigh.
