RCM "Children Hour" Events
Continue Monthly Through June
RALEIGH, N.C. (March 29, 2006) – The Raleigh City Museum will continue
its popular monthly RCM “Children’s Hour” events through June before
taking a respite for the summer months.
On Saturday, April 8 at 2:00 p.m. Museum Educator Ken Peters will
present “Raleigh’s Skyscrapers, Then & Now.” Using the current
exhibit “The Changing Face of Fayetteville Street” as a backdrop,
children will discover the history of Raleigh's high-rise buildings
while standing inside the city's first skyscraper, the 1874 Briggs
Building. The program includes a brief history of how Raleigh's
tallest structures developed over time, and then participants will get
to design and color their own skyscraper or future Raleigh skyline.
On Saturday, May 13 at 2:00 p.m. the museum will host “Raleigh: Past
and Present” with Museum Educator Ken Peters. In this activity,
presented within the museum’s current exhibit “It Started With One
Thousand Acres: Raleigh & its People,” children will learn about the
origins of Raleigh, its symbols and its major landmarks while making
their very own Historic Raleigh coloring books.
Then, on Saturday June 10 at 2:00 p.m. the RCM “Children’s Hour” will
celebrate Flag Day in advance with “Flag Symbolism.” Using the
museum's exhibit "Raleigh's City Flag: 100 Years," Museum Educator Ken
Peters will share the unusual story of why Raleigh has its own flag.
Then, kids will get to design their own flags using tips from the City
Flag exhibit.
The RCM “Children's Hour” is open to kids ages 6 and up. All children
must be accompanied by an adult during the program, which typically
runs approximately 45 minutes to one hour. The museum will provide
all materials for each activity. For more information, contact Ken
Peters at 832-3775 ext. 11.
