History Chests

If you can’t bring your students to the Raleigh City Museum, why not bring the Raleigh City Museum to your students? History chests are a great way to get kids interested and involved in local history. Each chest contains all the materials you will need to create a local history-learning extravaganza in your classroom. Contact Jenny Litzelman at 919.832.3775 for more information.

RALEIGH PAST & PRESENT
Students learn the origins of Raleigh and how the city has both changed and remained the same over time. Five lesson plans focus on the history, symbols, geography, people, and government of the city of Raleigh. Grades K-5 -
RALEIGH & THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT
Designed to supplement the current Civil Rights Movement curriculum for secondary students, this chest includes provocative artifacts, photographs, and suggested activities. Five lesson plans include discussions of the Jim Crow era, school integration, and local sit-ins. Grades 8-12. -
BUSINESSES THAT BUILT RALEIGH
This chest focuses on Raleigh’s commercial history from 1792 to the present. Each of the five lesson plans highlight a different era of Raleigh’s history. Grades 4-8. -
LOST RALEIGH
Students use artifacts, photographs, and maps to learn about the fundamentals of urban development as well as explore the history of some of Raleigh’s vanished landmarks. Teachers may choose between six lesson plans. Grades 4-8.
